Cardus and Barbe: Gathering Rosebuds

cardusbarbe cover

It is always good when someone writes something new about Neville Cardus and adds to the research.

Simon Lawton-Smith should be congratulated on his publication "Cardus and Barbe" which he produced in a private publication of 15 for friends and family. He includes never seen before cartoons by Neville and has had access to family autograph books etc.

We have persuaded him to do a second edition of 50 signed numbered copies to be sold for the Cardus Archive at Old Trafford.

About Cardus and Barbe:Gathering Rosebuds

As a man, Cardus was a complex character. He and his wife, Edith, were married platonically for over 46 years. They held each other in great esteem and affection. But, outside his cricketing and musical acquaintances, Cardus was happiest in the company of a succession of young women – his 'little girls', as Edith indulgently put it.

Of those 'little girls', one stood out above all others. She held a unique place in Cardus' affections through the 1930s, until her early death, an affection that lasted to the end of his own life. Her name was Hilda Elizabeth Ede, known by family and friends as Barbe, and to C B Fry as 'Milady'. This monograph tells the story of the affair between the acclaimed writer born into semi-poverty in Manchester and the married mother-of-three, daughter of a Mayor and Mayoress of Gravesend.

Author:- Simon Lawton Smith lives in south-east London, and shares with Neville Cardus and Barbe Ede their passion for cricket and classical music. In retirement he is a member of Surrey CCC and "likes nothing better than a slow, sparsely-attended day of County Championship cricket at the Oval".
