The model of local premier leagues to encourage competitive grass-roots cricket is generally thought of as a recent phenomenon, but in Cheshire, the current elite league was established as long ago as 1975, thanks to the visionary activities of Fred Millett, who brought together the leading twelve clubs in the county to play in a league of one hundred over-matches.
Previously, the Manchester Association had comprised forty clubs playing time-limited matches, and the championship had been determined on a percentage basis as it was impossible to play every other side.
Over the years, the competition has expanded significantly, and is now part of a pyramid structure across the county, with the Premier division at the top – the CCCL was the first northern competition to achieve CB elite premiership status in 1999. With three other leagues and a T20 competition as well, it is a flourishing league.
Author Geoff Wellsteed, whom readers may remember for his earlier books on cricket grounds and pavilions in Cheshire and cricketers from Reading, has taken a logical chronological approach to his account of the fifty years of the current league, with each season recorded over several pages (occasionally only a single page), with narrative highlights and lavish illustrations.
This A4 paperback is a fitting celebration of an achievement well worth celebrating.
