Barbed Wire &Cucumber Sandwiches

In these times of lockdown one of the things missing is listening to authors and their new books. Pitch Publishing should be congratulated for their Friday night talks with authors via Zoom.

Colin Shindler talked about his new book on the controversial South African Tour and its cancellation in 1970, replacing it with the Rest of The World series. Over 160 people 'zoomed in' to a two-hour discussion with Colin being interviewed and then an open Q & A session.

I was sceptical on how it would work but it was enthralling with an intimacy not there in a large room but here it was right into your living room or study. Colin was excellent in explaining how the tour was stopped due to a campaign led by Peter Hain set against the late 1960's student unrest and social tensions.

The tour that replaced it was against the Rest of The World which surprisingly has never been written about before and provided a feast of cricket from surely one of the best cricket teams to step onto a cricket field. With Mike Procter batting at no.9!

You also had the strange sight of four South Africans on the field together playing against each other: Basil D'Oliveira and Tony Greig for England facing Eddie Barlow and Mike Procter for the Rest of the World. The evening was a great success and there are more to come from other authors.

Surely this is one of the more unusual titles for a cricket book but it certainly needed writing. Congratulations to Pitch Publishing for a splendid book and a very good Friday night.
