Dundee Clowns Cricket Match 1879

In the late 1860's matches between cricketers and circus clowns began to take place around Britain. There were even teams of clowns formed who toured the country playing matches against local sides willing to meet their booking fee.

Some of these sides played in Scotland but none had come to Dundee, so when Watson's Circus arrived in the town in late summer 1879, local lawyer and keen cricketer Archibald Paul saw an opportunity to give the people of Dundee the chance to join in the fun and hopefully raise some cash for local good causes.

This is the story of Sam Watson's Circus, Archibald's charitable venture and the controversy that it provoked which has for too long been overlooked.
